Cancer

Cancer is a common term for a group of more than 100 diseases that affect different parts of the body. A few parts of the body that are known to be prone to cancer are the lungs, stomach, brain, liver, breasts and colon. Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, in 2005, cancer accounted for 13 per cent of deaths recorded over the world (External website that opens in a new window).

A major initiative taken by the Government against Cancer was the initiation of the National Cancer Control Programme (External website that opens in a new window) in 1975. The Programme was revised in 1984-85 with emphasis on primary prevention and early detection of the disease. Under the Programme, the government runs various schemes and aims at making overall cancer prevention and control comprehensive. The government has also founded Regional Cancer Centres across the country to make cancer treatment facilities available to those in need.
