Web Ratna Awards conferred for "Excellence in Web Space"

19th April, 2010, at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi

The first ever "Web Ratna Awards" were presented at an exclusive ceremony by Thiru A. Raja, Hon'ble Union Minister of Communications & IT in the presence of Shri Sachin Pilot, Hon'ble Minister of State for Communications & IT.

With the penetration of internet & availability of affordable means to access the world wide web, the government web-space can now be accessed by citizens of India across the nation, Rural and Urban alike. This raises the expectation from Government websites and portals for higher accessibility and citizen centricity to facilitate INCLUSIVE ACCESS to government information & services.

A Number of initiatives have been taken in this direction at various levels in the government, including Guidelines for Indian Government Websites released last year...........Web Ratna Awards would further strengthen these initiatives.

The "Web Ratna Awards" have been instituted, under the ambit of the National Portal of India (http://india.gov.in (website that opens in a new window)) by NIC, DEIT, to promote exemplary initiatives in e-governance using the medium of world wide web.

24 awards were conferred to teams and individuals in the following categories:

  1. Citizen Centric Service
  2. Public Participation Initiative
  3. Outstanding Web Content
  4. Innovative Use of Technology
  5. Comprehensive Web Presence - Ministry/Department
  6. Comprehensive Web Presence - State
  7. National Portal Coordinator
  8. NIC Coordinator for the National Portal

Web Ratna Awards ....today on its maiden voyage... shall go a long way in creating a high quality, universally Accessible & Inclusive Presence of Indian Government in Cyber Space.
